Le journal d’Aurélie Laflamme

Directed by: Christian Laurence
Recommended Ages: 12 and up (French with English Subtitles)
Saturday. March 24 – 4:15 PM @ Rose Wagner (no subtitle reader)

Feeling out of place the world, Aurelie Laflamme wonders if she might be an alien in this funny and touching look at a girl navigating the path to adolescence.

Since her father passed away, Aurélie has been feeling lonely and is filled with questions she can seem to answer. What if her father didn’t die but was an alien who returned to his home planet? That would mean that Aurélie is also from another planet, which would explain why she feels so different from everyone else (especially her mother), why she can’t string two words together without making a fool of herself, and why she has no idea how to act around boys. Aurélie is left to wonder and confide her innermost feelings to the pages of her diary as she tries to figure out her place in the world.

Filled with amusing fantasy sequences and genuinely tender moments, Aurélie Laflamme’s Diary perfectly captures the bumpy road from childhood into the chaotic world of a teenager. This poignant film won the Grand Prize at the 2011 New York International Children’s Film Festival.

OPENING NIGHT FILM
*vouchers are not redeemable for this special engagement

Tumbleweeds is excited to present a special advance screening of CHIMPANZEE as the Opening Night film for this year’s festival. Sumptuously shot in the rain forests of Africa, the new film from Disneynature and the award-winning directors of Earth, tells the true-life story of an adorable young chimp named Oscar. Oscar’s playful curiosity and zest for discovery showcase the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom.

The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimps, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family – including his mom, Isha, and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy – navigates the complex territory of the forest. But when Oscar’s family is confronted by a rival community of chimps, he is left to fend for himself until a surprising ally steps in and changes his life forever. As with the groundbreaking earlier Disneynature films, Chimpanzee boasts unparalleled nature photography and gives us an intimate first-hand look into the life of our closest relatives, while telling a truly remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph.

CLOSING NIGHT FILM
*Q&A following the film with lead-actor Muatasem Mishal and Executive Producer

This charming film examines the complexities of life through the eyes of an 11-year-old Muslim boy growing up in Brooklyn.

As the son of the Imam of the local Brooklyn mosque, Daud has to juggle the high expectations of his father and his feelings of isolation and difference—even from his peers in the Muslim community. Through an innocent act of good faith, Daud inadvertently befriends a group of Jewish boys, who mistake him as a fellow classmate at their orthodox school in the neighboring Jewish community. A genuine friendship grows between Daud and Yoav, one of the Jewish boys, and his family. Unable to resist the joy of a camaraderie that he has never felt before, David—as the other kids know him—is drawn into a complicated dilemma inspired by youthful deceit and the best of intentions.

With a cast largely made up of nonprofessionals, David is an understated, yet powerful, film that reveals that friendship can transcend the boundaries of religion and culture.

*Q&A after the film with Nova, one of the poets from the film

Exhilarating and inspiring, this documentary follow the fortunes of four diverse groups of high school students as they prepare for, and compete in one of the country’s leading youth poetry slam.

Each year since 2001, more than 600 students from more than 60 diverse Chicago-area schools assemble to take part in the city’s youth poetry slam competition. Among the competitors are Nate, who was picked for his vocabulary and learned to use wordplay as a weapon; Nova, whose poetry helps her confront her conflicted feelings about her absentee father; Adam, a wordsmith whose enthusiasm for the other poets rivals the energy of his work; and the team from Steinmetz (the “Steinmenauts”), last year’s surprise winners who this year are struggling to find the words to describe the challenges they are experiencing in their lives. As we follow the emotional journey toward the big event, we see how various poets’ lives shape their work and how their poetry helps them make sense of their worlds.

Hopeful and heartbreaking, energetic and enlightening, Louder Than a Bomb celebrates community, the joys of making language dance, and the power of finding one’s unique voice.
